Guide · the big question

Is it too early for Christmas music?

Nobody enforces a start date, which is why people argue about it every autumn. Here are the lines people actually use, what the dates are this year, and a way to ease in without annoying anyone.

The common lines

  • After Halloween (November 1). The early-bird line. Some shops and stations start around here.
  • After US Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026). The most common rule in the United States. It falls on the fourth Thursday of November.
  • First Sunday of Advent (November 29, 2026). Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30, and it marks the start of the Christmas season in many Christian traditions.
  • December 1. The calendar rule: simple and easy to defend.
  • Christmas Eve (December 24). The traditionalist line.

None of these is “correct”. It is a matter of taste, and of who else lives in your home.

Why instrumental lofi starts earlier without a fight

Much of the complaint about early Christmas music is about hearing the same famous songs on repeat. Instrumental lofi has no lyrics and no famous melody to get tired of, so it reads as “winter mood” rather than “the holidays are here”. That is why it is easy to start early, but it is a matter of feel, not a rule.

A gentle ramp

If you share a space, try easing in:

  1. 1

    Early November: wintry

Start with Snowfall: snow, frost and fog, not Christmas.

  2. 2

    Late November: cozy

Move to Cozy Fireside for blankets and hot drinks.

  3. 3

    December: the real thing

Switch to Non-Stop Christmas, where the two Christmas albums play most often, or Bake & Wrap while you bake and wrap.

The honest bit

Only 22 of the 112 tracks on this radio come from Purrple Cat’s Christmas albums (Snowbound and Ice Palace). The rest is cozy winter-night lofi. So the early-season stations really are “winter” more than “Christmas”.
